Check out our Q and A with Karissa:
OA: How did you feel about wearing braces for your engagement photos?
Karissa: We are getting married June 2, 2018 in Cancun, Mexico. I feel so comfortable with my braces that it didnβt bother me one bit about wearing them in our engagement pictures.
My braces should be coming off right before our wedding. If not, Dr. Archer agreed to take them off for the wedding and then put them back on after we get back from our honeymoon. It wouldnβt bother me to have to wear them at our wedding if Dr. Archer didnβt offer that to me. They have kind of become a little part of me, and I feel so confident smiling with them on.
Did you have braces as a child?
I never had braces as a child. I come from a family of seven so braces were never an option, because we just couldnβt afford them. I remember every birthday or Christmas as a child, I would always wish for braces.
Why did you choose to get orthodontic treatment as an adult?
I chose to get orthodontic treatment as an adult, because my smile means a lot to me, and I could finally afford it. I just wasnβt happy with my βoldβ smile. I knew straightening my teeth would give me more self – confidence and it was something that was beneficial to my future and health as I grow older.
What has orthodontic treatment been like for you?
My orthodontic treatment has been straightforward, simple and easy going. The worst part was getting my braces on. My mouth was sore for about two weeks. Every time I go in for an adjustment, my teeth are sore for about a week. Then I feel normal, and they arenβt causing any pain.
When I was younger, I would hear βhorrorβ stories from my peers about braces. Itβs nothing like what I heard. As long as you do everything you are asked to do, then you wonβt have any problems.
Iβve been wearing my rubber bands for over a year now and they donβt bother me one bit. They are actually super comfortable, and I am obsessed with wearing them. When I take them out to floss or brush, my mouth feels odd because itβs so used to having the elastics in. I am looking forward to my retainer stage though.
What would you say to other adults considering orthodontic treatment?
If you are contemplating orthodontic treatment, I would do it. It has honestly been the best decision I have ever made.
If you are worried about people making fun of you for having braces, people wonβt. I have had so many compliments about my braces and itβs a great conversation starter too.
It can be pricey but this will be something you have for the rest of your life, a perfect smile! The first step is to get the free consultation. OA is wonderful and willing to work with you!
I was scared at first, because it is such a big commitment, financially and just physically, but I wouldnβt take it back. If youβve dreamed of that perfect smile, you can achieve it through Orthodontic Associates. I know I am!
