A SMILE STORY
As a child who was teased for her crooked smile, Lisa Fulks decided to straighten her teeth as a young adult with Orthodontic Associates. Her straight, beautiful smile was well worth it and gave her the boost in confidence she needed to take more risks in life.
“I decided to get orthodontic treatment because I was worried I would lose my teeth early due to difficulty brushing my overcrowded teeth. I also had uncomfortable TMD symptoms that pushed me to seek help from an orthodontist,” said Lisa.
After completing her treatment plan, Lisa gained more than just a healthy smile. “Before treatment I had zero confidence. I never smiled and so people were reluctant to approach or hire me. My self-esteem was terrible. I was terrified to get to know new people, because I was teased all through school for my crooked teeth,” said Lisa. “Not only do I smile in pictures now, but I give a great big cheesy grin. Because I feel more confident, I go out more and take more risks in the adult world. Now I’m very outgoing and love meeting and talking with people I’ve never meet. I’ve had many more jobs, and am now going back to school. My confidence is back.”
It was a happy smile check-up for Luka and her mom with Dr. Archer! 😄
A couple years ago, Luka completed Phase 1 braces to create space for her adult teeth to come in properly. At today’s visit, we checked her growth and development — and she’s right on track. Phase 2 is coming soon!

What age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Dr. Archer and Dr. Amy discuss the best age for an evaluation and how early treatment planning can set the foundation for a confident, healthy smile.
💙 The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
💙 In most cases, treatment does not begin at age 7. However, early evaluation allows us to monitor your child’s growth and smile development every 6 months — at no cost to you.
💙 Proactive monitoring helps identify potential concerns early and determine the right timing for treatment, if and when it’s needed.
