Palatal Expanders

A palate expander, also known as a palatal expander, is a device used to widen the roof of your mouth. At Orthodontic Associates, we use palate expanders typically in children to correct posterior crossbites and to reduce crowding to make more room for their teeth. Wearing a palate expander can also help open airways and make space for unerupted teeth, like the upper canines, to prevent tooth impactions. Impacted teeth are unable to fully erupt into their proper position in your smile due to lack of space.

Types of Palate Expanders

From the makers of Invisalign clear aligners! The Invisalign® Palatal Expander System makes room for adult teeth in kids ages 6-11 using a series of 3D-printed expanders that gradually widen to create space for adult teeth.

Metal expanders are bonded to the teeth using printed metal technology instead of using the traditional more uncomfortable bands.

At Orthodontic Associates, we use 3D printed metal technology to create a truly custom appliance—which offers benefits to both the orthodontic team and patients. The flexibility in custom digital design provides greater treatment efficiency and ensures a precise fit. Unlike traditional metal bands where separators are often required, 3D metal printing saves valuable chair time, eliminates the discomfort of separators, and provides a better patient experience.

What age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Dr. Archer and Dr. Amy discuss the best age for an evaluation and how early treatment planning can set the foundation for a confident, healthy smile.
💙 The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
💙 In most cases, treatment does not begin at age 7. However, early evaluation allows us to monitor your child’s growth and smile development every 6 months — at no cost to you.
💙 Proactive monitoring helps identify potential concerns early and determine the right timing for treatment, if and when it’s needed.
