Michelle Shaw has wanted a new smile since she was in second grade. As a young adult, she attempted to get braces several times. When told her smile was too complicated or unusual, she felt embarrassed and didn’t follow through with orthodontic treatment. Finally at the age of 52 and promoted to an executive job, she was ready to try again – with Orthodontic Associates!

OA: Michelle, thank you for sharing your smile story with us! Can you tell us a little more about yourself?

Michelle: You’re welcome! I am a vice president in the mortgage industry on the technology side. In my free time, I am an avid gym-goer, roller skater, and “thrifter.”

What brought you to Orthodontic Associates?

I have always covered my smile and took pictures with my mouth closed, because I felt self-conscious. Now that I am in an executive position with a job I love, I want to feel confident, especially when presenting in front of crowds of people. I had heard great things from other adults who used OA and had seen amazing results.

Can you tell me about your experience at OA with braces treatment?

At Orthodontic Associates, they never made me feel ashamed for waiting until adulthood to address my over-crowded smile. Rather, the doctors and team applauded that I was addressing it and focused on how happy I would be when I saw the result. This made me excited vs. embarrassed and made me want to go on the journey with them! From my initial consultation to the end, I felt like I had a whole team of people as excited as I was to get to the final result! Every person I interacted with was professional, kind and supportive.

How has your new smile changed your life?

It has been a life changer! I smile a LOT more, and I receive so many compliments on what a nice smile I have from strangers who didn’t know what I looked like before! It makes me feel so proud and confident.

We are required to have professional headshots for work, and I have put it off for two and a half years. Now, I can smile confidently for photos! It’s amazing to not think about it or be self-conscious about it anymore. It has freed up so much mental and emotional energy for me!

What would you say to others considering orthodontic treatment?

Don’t let age stop you. Just because you’ve managed for years feeling down on yourself, doesn’t mean you have to accept that it will always be that way. It’s NEVER too late! The time passes quickly when you see the results happening and before you know it, you’ll be done and so happy!

Don’t underestimate the power of a confident smile. It can change your entire outlook on life and how you are perceived by others. It’s one of the best investments you could ever make in yourself.
