One of the most common questions we hear new patients ask is if treatment will be painful. We want to calm your anxieties by diving into what exactly might cause discomfort and what will be painless.
WILL IT HURT WHEN YOU PUT MY BRACES ON?
No. When you first arrive, we clean your teeth and dry the surface so that the brackets will stick to each tooth. Then, we squirt a tiny piece of glue on each tooth and place each bracket on the tooth very gently, like a sticker.
WILL IT HURT DURING TREATMENT WHEN I’M WEARING MY BRACES OR INVISALIGN ALIGNERS?
Whether you are wearing braces or Invisalign retainers, both cause slight discomfort to some degree throughout treatment, because your teeth are slowly moving overtime – like breaking in a new pair of shoes.
Braces can cause more initial discomfort the first 2-3 days after we put them on and after each follow up visit to have them adjusted.
And each time you switch out your Invisalign trays there will be minor discomfort the first fews days.
We encourage patients to take over-the-counter pain relievers for discomfort. We also provide you with a “chewy,” which is a small, flexible piece you can chew on to relieve discomfort.
Overall, you will be able to function normally to go to school, work, play or take care of kids. If you ever experience severe pain or discomfort, please call us at (405) 947-1526 so we can help you.
